Lid lifter questions
What is a magnetic lid lifter used for?
It lifts flat canning lids and bands out of hot water one at a time, so you don't burn your fingers or touch the sealing compound.
Are mason jar lids magnetic?
Yes. Standard metal canning lids and bands are steel with a coating, so a magnet picks them up. Plastic lids and Tattler lids are not magnetic.
Do I still need to heat canning lids?
Follow the directions on your lid box. Many current lids only need to be washed and kept at room temperature, but the lid lifter is still handy for pulling lids from warm water or a lid rack.
Will the magnet scratch the lid?
No. The tip picks the lid up by its top surface and doesn't scrape the sealing compound.
